QUIA

Salut, tout le monde!  It was great to see parents at Thursday night's PTSA Open House.  Thanks for coming out!  Félicitations go out to François F. who discovered that Fiona is the name of the fire ant (la fourmi sérieuse) on Tex's French Grammar site.  Bravo!

Don't forget to stay home lundi le premier septembre -- it's Labor Day!  I hope that you enjoy your three day weekend!  When we return to school on mardi le 2 septembre, we will have Fall Sports Spirit Week. Here are the days:
mardi - Team Sports Day; mercredi - Dress for Success with white shirts and dazzling ties; jeudi - Throw Back Thursday; vendredi - PHS spirit wear and Pep Rally (Seniors - black shirts, Juniors - navy blue shirts, Sophomores - maroon shirts, and Freshmen - white shirts).

This week we closed out the Pop Culture Icon project.  You taught me a lot about current pop culture! Also, we continued to review all French 1 topics. We went to the lab to try out your new QUIA login for the semester.  Your username is your 1st and last name (lowercase, no spaces) with 765 at the end.  Your password is a randomly assigned word and number.  Please memorize this login because you will be using it a lot!  You can even try the games, activities and quizzes from the comfort of your own home!  Just click here to access the site -- www.quia.com.  After logging in, you will click on "Class Web Page" to get to the games, activities, and quizzes.  Try seven games/activities and take the quiz on weather.  You can refer to the assignment sheet given out in class.  If you click on my name, you will get my Profile Page which will let you connect to different websites that will provide even more valuable practice.

We returned a verb quiz this week.  If your score was lower than desired, remember that I am offering a special tutoring opportunity on mardi le 2 septembre (Tuesday, September 2nd) after school.  Please try to attend to better prepare yourself for Thursday's review exam!  Merci!  Ciao!

Chocolat

Bonjour!  On Thursday (8/21), we will hold our first French Club meeting for 2014-2015!  Please join us for the annual Chocolat meeting.  We will be watching and eating chocolat!  We will begin right after school in room #103.  If you need to come after 5th period -- that is fine.  If you need to leave early -- that's fine too!  Bring some chocolat to share!  We will be nominating officers, planning activities for the year and selecting t-shirt designs soon.

In class this week, we are working with verbs, verbs, verbs.  We are watching various YouTube clips to review subject pronouns and verb forms.  Also, we have used Languages Online to review basic French 1 topics.  We are also working on the Solomon Grundy projet.  You can either create a <<livre de Smoosh>> or recite the poem.  The due date for this assignment is jeudi.

This week if you need to work more with French verbs, check out Tex's French Grammar at the University of Texas.  Click here http://www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/ to access the site.  Then click inside the magnifying glass to find some outstanding grammar advice and practice.  Hook 'em horns!

For our challenge question this week, I will award dix tickets to the first three people who can give me the name of the <<fire ant>> from Tex's French Grammar.  You might have to dig around a bit to find this answer!  Bonne chance!  Ciao!

Course Syllabus

Salut!

Félicitations!  We made through week one!  All students should have received a Bon Voyage! Level 2 textbook last week.  You will leave this book at your home as a resource.  The text will be collected in December before the semester's end.

We distributed and discussed the course syllabus.  The "light blue" signature sheet needs to be completed and turned in by mercredi le 20 août.

We are continuing with our review of all things French 1.  We took a spelling quiz.  Also, this week we will take the Common Assessment.  We are continuing to work with numbers, giving the date, talking about seasons and weather and review of verbs and vocabulary.  We will also begin reading in our Lisons comme ça! text.  Homework will include a handout on numbers and the Solomon Grundy project.

For this week, I would like to direct you to the Languages Online site out of Australia.  This is an excellent resource to review some of the French 1 topics that might be driving you "dingue" right now.  Click here to access and play some games -- http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/  Click on French and then select the online activities that you need.  Bonne chance!  Ciao!

Bonjour tout le monde!

dimanche - Bonjour et bienvenue!  Welcome to French class!  I hope that your summer was relaxing and restful!  I am excited about helping you master French in 2014-2015.  I will be happy to work with you either before or after school.  My regular tutoring hours are Thursdays from 3:35-4:15.  I can stay later as needed.  With one day of notice, I can help any other day except for Monday and Wednesday afternoons or other days when there are meetings.

In French 2 this semester, we will begin by reviewing all of the French 1 topics -- verbs, adjectives, articles and vocabulary.  If desired, you can select a French name for use in class.  Memorize the spelling of this name!  All students will be receiving the class syllabus soon.  Please have the signature page at the back of the document signed and returned to class by August 20, 2014.  Keep the rest of the document for your reference throughout the semester.

From time to time on my blog, I will pose challenge questions based on websites that focus on a French topic...culture, language, current events, etc.  Stay tuned for more details.  For today, I want to send you to the United Nations World Food Programme site that will help build your French vocabulary while earning grains of rice that go to help those in need around the world.  You can learn some French while helping others.  Click here to access the site - www.freerice.com.  Click on "Change Subject" and select "French" to play.  You can also test your knowledge in several other areas as well -- Math, English, Geography, Art, etc.

Bonne chance!  Ciao!  Madame Verser
